Spiky, sun drenched blue agave plants dot the hills and valleys of Jalisco, Mexico, several hours’ drive into the hills above Guadalajara.

Nature’s perfect blend of color – the contrast of red-earth clay in the higher elevations and loamy dark volcanic soil of the lowlands frame the cool blue-green agave plants which shimmer like a vast sea.

The differences in soil, weather and elevation produce distinct tequilas – very much like those of fine wine. It gets quite warm in both the valley and highlands of Jalisco, but the highlands enjoy cooler nights and more rain.  Highland tequilas tend to be a bit more floral, with a mineral quality. Those from agave grown in the lowlands are a little spicier, with an aroma of clay.

When tasting tequilas, blancos will allow you to experience ‘tequila terroir’ more than reposados or anejos, which have been aged in barrels. Fine tequila should be sipped – let it sit on your tongue until it reaches body temperature, then savor the complexity of the drink and the land where it was produced.

A few of our tequilas are Don Julio, Fortaleza, Tapatio, Suerte and Tequila Ocho. We feature small-batch, artisanal tequilas for tastings, and share our rare tequilas for special events.

Taco Bar y Mezcaleria

Taco Bar y Mezcaleria

The first Taco Bar and Mezcaleria of it’s kind!
Experience Pre-Hispanic culture at Mayahuel.
OPEN:
5:00 pm to close
Wednesday – Saturday

Mezcal is the original Tequila, made with Wild Agave varieties in  the Pre-Hispanic tradition. It is synonymous with the beauty of a culture whose history dates back as early as 8,000 B.C., with the formation of early villages in Mesoamerica. The process of making Mezcal is slow and meticulous, and has changed little over the centuries.

Known as the ‘Nectar of the Gods’, Mezcal has a flavor quite unique and different from Tequila. Most of the Mezcal created today still begins with wild Agave harvested in arid, mountainous areas of Mexico. Slow growing and beautiful, many of the varieties of wild Agave take from 50-70 years to mature. The Master Distillers are proud of their craft – and respectful of the land. The preservation of the wild Agave is essential to them, and results in sustainable harvesting methods and small-batch production.

Our Taco Bar features ingredients authentic to the spirit of an indigenous culture which has existed in the mountains of Mexico for many centuries, and is designed to pair perfectly with the aromas and flavors of fine Mezcales.

To Know Mezcal is to Know Mexico – savor the unique experience of our Taco Bar y Mezcaleria!

Art plays an important role in the culture and storytelling of Mexico

Sculpture in Mesoamerica was first represented with the alteration of animal bones. The oldest known bone sculpture is an animal skull from Tequixquiac, and dates between 10,000 and 8,000 BC. One of the most famous three-dimensional stone sculptures is the giant Olmec stone heads. Both stone carvings and mural paintings were thought to be a part of the architecture rather than separate; buildings represented an opportunity to tell a visual story.

Pre-Columbian art thrived in Mexico beginning as early as 1800 BC. Angular, linear patterns were preferred, depicting everything from daily life to deities.

Indigenous elements were preferred during the first half of the 20th century, with the Mexican Muralist Movement. Artists such as Diego Rivera and Jose Clemente Orozco led the Muralist movement, which retains popularity today.

We’re proud to bring you some of the finest art by Mexican artists who represent the beauty, passion and history of Mexico.

Musica

Musica

Music holds the joy, passion and romance of Mexico close to it’s heart.

Listen carefully to the story of El Nino Perdido – one of the most beautiful songs of the Mariachi.20131019-IMG_7451

Out of the silence comes the refrain of a lone trumpet playing in the background. Softly, the lost child calls to his mother. Haunting, heartbreaking, the calls search; the trumpet laments.
The mother answers, joyful and anxious – the second trumpet lilting and searching. Thus is the conversation of El Nino Perdido

Mariachi tells the stories of Mexico – the love, betrayal, grief and elation.

Dia de los Muertos – the Day of the Dead – it’s origins trace back hundreds of years to an  indigenous Aztec festival dedicated to the Goddess Mictecacihuatl. In Aztec mythology, the Goddess was the Queen of the Underworld. Her role was to carefully watch over the bones of the dead and preside over the ancient festivals in honor of those who were no longer in the living world.
